We have exciting news for District 14 students — library cards are in!

“This summer I worked closely with

and we decided to try it through our online registration process,” said Cat Olimb, the school district’s director of technology. “We had more than a thousand kids sign up.”

D14 students who signed up will receive their cards in the mail over the next few weeks.

“We’re checking out a lot of books,” said Olimb. “We’re actually probably one of the school districts in Colorado that, through Overdrive, has been checking out the most books, especially during COVID.”

Overdrive is the largest online book provider in the nation.

With this library card, students are able to access books, computers and printers. They also can take advantage of some really cool programs in the Manitou Art Center’s makerspaces.

“The Manitou Springs Library is obviously currently here in the MAC, which gives us a lot of new opportunities that we did not have when we were up at the Carnegie,” said Taryn Malila, Manitou Springs Library manager.

“The main thing is the MAC partnership, which gives library card owners of any age access to the MAC as long as they apply for a MAC membership — but that is free with a library card.”

The MAC has a woodshop, pottery studio, design and computer lab, just to name a few offerings.

“The school district is really excited to join forces with Pikes Peak Library District. For many years, we’ve already been able to provide thousands of books online through Overdrive and SORA,” an app that allows students to download books, Olimb said.

“This was possible through a grant and also partnership with PPLD and the Board of Cooperative Education Services.”
