I really hope Mayor Graham was being sarcastic when he made a comment about LGTBQ+ and Juneteenth celebrations being reversely discriminatory. Discrimination does not live in a vacuum; it almost always results in a negative experience for the person or people being discriminated against. I can not see how my white, cisgender family might have a negative experience from a parade that celebrates two different groups of people, both of whom have been marginalized and discriminated against for centuries. Quite the opposite. Discriminatory systems prevail when people running those systems refuse to acknowledge the discrimination within the system. Denying parades that celebrate cultural differences is discrimination because it sends a message that those differences are unimportant to our community. Is that the message we want to convey?
